The veterinary assistant is responsible for supervising and aiding in the exam room experience for the client. He/She’s main focus will be to assist the DVMs with patients coming in for services within the exam rooms and treatment room. The veterinary assistant interacts with the clients in person and over the phone to aid in communication from the Veterinarian or hospital staff. The veterinary assistant will help to educate and promote the hospitals message on a daily basis.

These responsibilities will not be limited to the following list.

⦁ Provide compassionate care to pets and hospitalized patients

⦁ Prepare and stock vaccinations for use by Veterinarians and Technicians

⦁ Prepare preventative medications for first puppy visits- this may include heartworm prevention, flea and tick prevention, and/or deworming medications

⦁ Prepare vaccines and Proheart6 or 12 along with documenting Proheart6 or 12 information in patients file

⦁ Accurately fill medications as prescribed by the Veterinarian

⦁ Be sure patients waiting to be seen by the Veterinarian have a current weight updated, been premedicated for any vaccination reactions, all technician related items have been completed.

⦁ Clean and sanitize exam rooms between patients

⦁ Stock and organize exam rooms as needed

⦁ Keep track of clients in exam rooms so they are attended to and Drs needs are met to expedite their visit

⦁ Veterinary assistants will receive patients from Veterinarian with instructions to be carried out in treatment by the technicians

⦁ Be available within the Pharmacy area or in treatment

⦁ Return patients to exam rooms for the Veterinarians in a clean and presentable condition-free of blood, urine, feces or excessive alcohol.

⦁ Aid in restraining patients for vaccine administration or treatments performed by Veterinarians or Technicians

⦁ Finish exam room visits by explaining medications, showing how to administer meds and answering any client questions or concerns

⦁ Diagnostic test preparation: in-house cytologies or parvo tests

⦁ Able to successfully use the microscope for diagnostic purposes.

⦁ Be familiar with the practice software, Cornerstone, to input charges into the PVL, update weights and navigate client and patient files.

⦁ Exhibit knowledge of preventatives, medications and vaccinations.

⦁ Assist receptionist by answering phone calls

⦁ Properly check-out clients in exam rooms and collect payments.

⦁ Provide end-of life information for owners and discuss cremation options that are offered

⦁ Maintain cleanliness in the pharmacy area by sweeping, mopping and taking out garbage’s as needed.

⦁ Know proper animal handling and restraint techniques

⦁ Understand infectious diseases and how to control and prevent their spread

Educational Requirements:

⦁ High school diploma or equivalent, or in the process of obtaining

⦁ Minimum age requirement of 18 years old

Skills Needed:

⦁ Ability to read and comprehend instructions

⦁ Effective communication with clients in person and by phone

⦁ Experience in caring for animals, proper restraint techniques

⦁ Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals

⦁ Open availability

Physical Obligations:

⦁ Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

⦁ Endure standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods of time

⦁ Able to work in noisy work conditions with sounds from animals and equipment

⦁ Take safety precautions for exposure to toxins, drugs, anesthesia and radiation
