Farm and Equine Veterinary Surgeon

Job Description

The Role

We are currently looking for a farm and equine Veterinary Surgeon to join our friendly team in Truro, Cornwall. This is a full-time role working 40 hours a week over 5 days with one afternoon off from 1pm. There is a shared rota of nights and weekends currently 1 in 4 with informal reserve system. Relocation assistance is available and we can offer visa sponsorship.

Serving a wide range of farm and equine clients the majority of work is ambulatory with clinic support for some further investigations, treatment and standing surgery. Farm is a good mix of modern dairy clients, beef and sheep farmers and small holders. We perform routine fertility work, herd health planning, bull testing, Tb testing, and attending to ill individuals and outbreaks in a compact area allowing us to maintain long term relations with our friendly clients. Equine mix is a broad range of pleasure and competition work. We perform health exams, motorised dental work, AI, vetting’s, and lameness exams. At the clinic we can work up lameness with x rays and US scans, more advanced dental work, standing surgery and medical hospitalisations. Tb testing is performed and shared equally between the vets to support our on-farm service, though plenty of time for quality clinical work remains.

About Us

We work from a purpose-built clinic on the edge of the county`s capital equally accessible to the north and south coast. Our area is lovely Cornish country and coast, with Truro being the cultural and business centre. Beaches and surfing to the north, creeks and sailing and swimming to the south, and trails and hills between for walking, riding, running, and cycling. With stabling for horse`s and farm animals we can either work in the practice or provide services on farms. The clinic has cattle surgical stocks and pens for smaller patients, and farmers often bring in their animals to see us. For horses we have a sand school for lameness exams and stabling for treatments and investigations with experienced assistance and lovely support staff. We focus on a joint approach to cases and our clients, and a personal and friendly service. Case back up and advice is important to us to help our clients get the best service possible.

We have a team of 5 Veterinary Surgeons who all cover farm and equine work but also have areas of particular interest and skill. Some may bias farm or equine and all can provide input to those difficult cases. We have the support of local and regional referral services where required, though like to resolve cases ourselves where possible. A friendly and open approach is key to the team with each member valued and supported. We have lovely support staff to assist with admin and organisation of the day, and are an important part of providing our clients with a prompt and effective service .

Applicant Requirements

The role would suit someone with some experience and wanting to develop skills and experience in farm and equine practice, but equally a capable new graduate can be supported into the role. A professional caring approach is required with some organisation and ability to think through situations. Back up is always provided to give our clients confidence in the service, but equally someone with self-reliance and confidence would relish the problem-solving nature of the role. We can offer relocation assistance for the right candidate for this role.
