Clinical Director

Job Description

The Role

Clinical Director needed for our fantastic practice in Ashford! As one of the top SA veterinary hospitals in Kent with two branch surgeries, we offer candidates an excellent package with the opportunity to enjoy a superb work/life balance. You will receive a competitive salary, pension scheme and 6 weeks’ holiday per year. The working pattern is 4 days/week – OOH cases are referred to an external provider.

Our consulting hours run from 8am-8pm. Vets either start at 8am, 9am, 10:30am or 11am, with finish times of 6pm, 7pm or 8pm. We have at most 6-7 vets in per day with three consulting rooms operating over 12 hours, plus a group of vets and nurses working together on dedicated operating/procedures shifts. Lunch breaks run from 12:30/1pm to 2pm, with a dedicated 15 minute ward rounds at 1:45pm with all the vets and kennel nurses to discuss and finalise plans for our inpatients.

Our out of hours care is performed by VetsNow in another practice, but we retain inpatient care of any pets who require ongoing care. We have a group of night nurses who work 8pm-8am overnight and there is a rolling overnight inpatient duty system many of the vets are rota'd.

About Us

Barrow Hill Veterinary Hospital has a reputation for ethical excellent veterinary care. The practice has been in place in its current site for over 20 years and has had RCVS hospital status during this period. Barrow Hill Veterinary Hospital is unique in that the staff are highly motivated to ensure the best care of its clients and their pets, as well as being one of the best equipped first opinion veterinary hospitals in the Kent/Sussex region. Many of our vets and nurses either have or are studying for additional qualifications in Medicine, Diagnostic Imaging, Surgery, Emergency/Critical Care or Anaesthesia/Analgesia. With access to CT on site, laparoscopic/arthroscopic equipment, upgraded ultrasound, a full suite of orthopaedic kits (TPLO, APLS locking, AO/ASIF), dental radiography and two surgical theatres, you will be hard pressed to find a more equipped and able veterinary practice for the vast majority of first and second opinion veterinary needs.

The hospital benefits from being part of a larger group of three practices. In total there are 12 veterinary surgeons (three with certificates, four studying for one), 24 nurses (a mix of part time and full time including night nurses) and 18 administrative/reception staff.

The hospital's vast prep room is a busy area with a constant flow of cases coming through. There's (thankfully) never a dull moment during the day and there's always either music on in the background and a smile found on many of the vets and nurses' faces. The team takes a collaborative approach to working with each other, ensuring they learn from each other where a learning opportunity presents itself.

Ashford, Kent has a high speed rail link (35 minutes) into central London and is well located for someone to enjoy the benefits of a large town, with the proximity to a major city, expansive 'Garden of England' countryside and great beaches of Camber Sands, Rye Harbour and Folkestone.

Applicant Requirements

For our Clinical Director role, we would love for someone with small animal experience, a Certificate in any discipline, previous management experience and the desire to make a difference with the veterinary team as a whole. A true team player who listens to the needs of the wider veterinary team, communicates effectively and leads by example. The role requires ideally a 50:50 balance between clinical and non-clinical workloads to cater to the needs of our clients as well as the pets we treat.

The Clinical Director would also need to be able to support our less experienced vets and act as a mentor to those on the IVC New Graduate Academy. A strong desire for collaborative working with the rest of our Senior Management Team (Clinical Director, Practice Manager, Head Nurse, Deputy Head Nurse, Head Receptionist) is vital to ensure that the practice works collectively to achieve its shared goals.
